A city guide from

First things first

Welcome

Porto is small enough to explore on foot, hilly enough to make you earn your lunch, and good enough at food and wine that you probably won’t mind.

There’s the postcard version — tiled façades, the Douro, Ribeira, port wine and francesinhas — but the city gets more interesting the further you wander from the obvious route.

So instead of trying to tell you everything about Porto, we’ve put together the things we’d actually recommend to someone visiting our office.

Where we’d eat. Where we’d drink. Where we’d go when the sun is out. What we’d do with two hours, one evening or a completely free Sunday.

There are many ways to do Porto

Porto in a nutshell

Local language

Portuguese, although you’ll get by easily in English (you might be surprised)

The vibe

A compact, increasingly international city where tech, design and creative communities mix with a very local way of life.

Best way around

Walking, Metro and the occasional Uber

Porto is hilly

Google Maps will tell you a route takes 12 minutes. It may not mention that half of it is vertical.

The center is compact

A lot of the city’s best bits are surprisingly close together.

Lunch is not always a quick bite

Especially if someone says “let’s just have one drink.”

There’s a lot happening here

Universities, startups, tech companies and creative communities bring a steady flow of people into the city, while a lively cultural scene keeps the calendar full of exhibitions, concerts, museums and events.

Curious about Porto as a place to build?

Porto’s growing ecosystem is one of the reasons we’ve chosen to build here. Strong universities, companies and communities bring talent together and create opportunities to connect and build.

We’ve seen it firsthand through our Tech Hubs work, helping companies build product, design and engineering teams in Portugal.
